The Complete Disney+ Streaming Guide

Everything you need to know about Disney+ — from setting up your Disney account and signing in on any device, to understanding error codes like Error 83, Error 39, and Error 73.

Getting Started with Disney+

New to Disney+ or setting up on a new device? This section covers creating your Disney account, signing in on every platform, and understanding how the Disney Bundle affects your login.

How to Create a Disney+ Account

  1. Go to disneyplus.com and click Sign Up Now.
  2. Enter your email address and create a password. This creates a Disney account — the same login used for other Disney services (shopDisney, Walt Disney World, etc.).
  3. Select your plan and enter payment information to complete sign-up.
  4. Check your email for a verification link if Disney asks you to confirm your address.

Signing In on Any Device

iPhone or Android

Download the Disney+ app, open it, and tap Log In. Enter your Disney account email and password. If prompted, verify your account via email before being granted access.

PC or Mac browser

Go to disneyplus.com and click Log In in the top-right corner. If the sign-in page is unresponsive, disable all browser extensions (especially ad blockers and privacy tools) and make sure cookies are enabled for disneyplus.com.

Smart TV or streaming device

Open the Disney+ app, select Log In, and choose Sign in with a code. A 6–8 character activation code appears on screen. On your phone or computer, go to disneyplus.com/begin, sign in to your Disney account, and enter the code. Your TV signs in within seconds.

Forgot Your Password?

  1. Go to disneyplus.com and click Log In, then Forgot password?
  2. Enter your Disney account email address and submit.
  3. Check your inbox and spam folder for a password reset link from Disney.
  4. You can also reset at disneyaccount.disney.com, which manages all Disney digital services in one place.

Profiles and Parental Controls

Disney+ supports up to 7 profiles per account. From the profile selection screen, tap Add Profile, enter a name, and optionally enable Kids Profile to restrict content to G and TV-G rated titles only. To add a Profile PIN, go to your profile icon → Edit Profiles → select a profile → Profile PIN.

You can view and manage all devices signed in to your account at disneyplus.com → Account → Device Management.

Disney+ Error Codes, Explained

Disney+ error codes each point to a specific category of problem. Here's what the most common ones mean and how to address each one.

Error Code 83 — Device compatibility or connection timeout

Error 83 is Disney+'s most common error and can appear on any device. It usually means there's a temporary communication issue between your device and Disney+ servers, or a device compatibility problem.

  1. Force close Disney+ completely and reopen it — this resolves the error in most cases.
  2. Restart your streaming device by unplugging it from power for 60 seconds.
  3. Update the Disney+ app to the latest version from your app store.
  4. If nothing else works, uninstall and reinstall Disney+ for a clean installation.

Error Code 39 — HDCP / secure connection issue

Error 39 is an HDCP (content protection) handshake failure between your device and your display. Disney+ requires an HDCP-compliant connection to stream protected content.

  1. Unplug the HDMI cable from your device and TV, then firmly reconnect both ends.
  2. Try a different HDMI port on your television.
  3. Remove any HDMI splitters or AV receivers — connect the streaming device directly to the TV.
  4. Replace your HDMI cable with a High Speed HDMI 2.0 cable.

Error Code 73 — Location or VPN detected

Error 73 appears when Disney+ detects a VPN, proxy, or Smart DNS service on your connection, or when your device's location settings don't match the expected region.

  1. Disable any VPN, proxy, or Smart DNS service on your device or router.
  2. Restart your router after disabling the VPN to clear cached IP routing.
  3. Check that your device's date, time, and time zone are set correctly.
  4. If traveling internationally, some content may not be available in your current region — this is a licensing restriction.

Error Code 41 — Too many concurrent streams

Disney+ allows up to 4 simultaneous streams per account. Error 41 appears when that limit is reached.

  1. Check if family members are watching on other devices and ask them to pause.
  2. Sign in to disneyplus.com → Account → review your active devices.
  3. Select Log Out of All Devices to end all active sessions at once.
  4. If you don't recognize a device, change your password to secure your account.

Error Code 42 — Connection timeout

Error 42 means Disney+ started loading content but lost the connection before completing. It's distinct from Error 83 (device issue) — 42 is purely a network timeout that can affect any device.

  1. Restart your modem and router by unplugging them for 30 seconds.
  2. Run a speed test at fast.com — Disney+ needs at least 5 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K.
  3. Switch from Wi-Fi to a wired Ethernet connection if possible for a more stable signal.
  4. Disable any VPN or proxy service and try again.
  5. If the error only affects one title, that content may be temporarily unavailable — try a different title to confirm it's not content-specific.

Error Code 76 — Internal service error

Error 76 is an internal Disney+ server-side error that usually resolves on its own. It can appear during high-demand periods (new releases, live events) or when Disney+'s servers have a temporary issue.

  1. Check downdetector.com/status/disney-plus to see if there's a wider outage.
  2. Wait 5–10 minutes and try again — most Error 76 occurrences resolve without any action.
  3. Force close Disney+ and reopen it to get a fresh connection to the servers.
  4. If the error persists across multiple devices, it's a server issue — wait and retry later.

Error Code 9 — Subscription or account access error

Error 9 means Disney+ couldn't verify that your account has an active subscription. This happens when a payment fails, the billing period lapses, or your account is accessing content on a tier that doesn't include it.

  1. Sign in at disneyplus.com → your profile icon → Account → Subscription to check your plan status.
  2. If a payment was declined, update your payment method under Account → Billing.
  3. If you subscribed through Apple, Roku, or another partner, verify the subscription is active in that platform's settings — billing issues there don't show up in the Disney+ account page.
  4. Sign out of Disney+ on all devices and sign back in after confirming the subscription is active.

Blank / Black Screen — No video after loading

A black screen after Disney+ loads is almost always an HDCP issue — the TV and streaming device aren't completing the content protection handshake.

  1. Disconnect and reconnect your HDMI cable on both ends.
  2. Switch to a different HDMI port on your TV.
  3. Try lowering your TV or device's resolution setting temporarily (e.g., from 4K to 1080p).
  4. Bypass any AV receiver, soundbar, or HDMI splitter — connect directly to test.

Audio Only / No Video — Sound plays but screen is black

When Disney+ plays audio but the screen stays black, it's typically a resolution mismatch or an HDCP handshake failure at the video output level.

  1. Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends and reconnect firmly.
  2. Switch to a different HDMI port — HDCP handshake issues are often port-specific.
  3. Lower your device's display output from 4K/HDR to 1080p as a temporary test.
  4. Remove any HDMI splitter, AV receiver, or capture card and connect directly to the TV.
